Did You Know? – Symbolism of New Year Dishes
On New Year’s Eve, the entire family would gather together for reunion dinner. Dishes served during this dinner have special meanings – for example, the fish, chicken or duck must be served whole, including the head and the tail. Below are some of the ingredients that are prepared within the dishes to symbolise prosperity:
Niangao (New Year cake) – an increase in status every year.
Spring Rolls – good harvest and prosperity.
Chinese cabbage – growth of all living things.
Vermicelli – gold threads.
Dumplings – shaped like ancient gold ingots, also called Fortune God Dumplings.
Bamboo shoots – growth in status and good business.
Soybean sprouts – shaped like ruyi (a jade ornament) that brings good luck.
Fish (yu) – implying nian nian you yu, meaning there will be surplus every year.
Useful Tip
What do we do with old, rusty coins? Before you decide to throw them away, try soaking them in a cup of Coke…Voila! The rust is gone and mint-condition coins!!
