Greetings!
Happy 2010!
A new year marks a new beginning and new resolutions! For me, this new year marks an exciting milestone for my son and I – my baby’s all grown up now! Sob! Sob! (Actually he’s just starting nursery class). So what’s this New Year going to be like for you? A new job, “OMG! We’re going to have a baby!”, getting used to being called Mrs…., or simply coping with your child’s temper tantrums?
Celebrating festivals brings questions to my little tot’s mind and this Lunar New Year is no exception – “What’s Chinese New Year, Mummy? Why do people have lion dance?” Does anyone know the origin and development of the Spring Festival? Have you ever wonder how the Festival has some relationship with a monster? Read on in this issue to find out…..Gong Xi Fa Cai everyone!
cheers.

Did you know? – The Origins of Chinese New Year
The Spring Festival (also called “Nian”,) is the grandest festival for the Chinese. According to the legend, there was a very ugly and ferocious monster called Nian, which resembled either the dragon or unicorn. On the first and the 15th of each lunar month, it would come down from the mountains to hunt for people. Thus, the villagers were very much afraid of it and locked their doors early before sunset on the days of its coming.
There was an old wise man in a village who had a brilliant plan and asked the people to come together by means of beating drums and gongs, burning bamboo, and lighting fireworks, thus, making large noises to threaten the hateful monster. On a moonless and freezing cold night, Nian, appeared again. However, wherever it went, Nian was forced to back off by the terrible noises made by the people. Nian couldn’t stop running until it fell down with exhaustion. The people quickly jumped on it and killed the evil monster.
Since then, people have kept the tradition of beating drums and gongs, and lighting fireworks at the coldest day in winter to drive the imagined monster away and to celebrate the victory over it. Today, Nian refers to the New Year’s day or the Spring Festival. People often say Guo Nian, which means ‘live the festival.’ Nian also means the year. For an example, the Chinese often greet each other by saying Xin Nian Hao, which means Happy New Year! (Xin means new and Hao means good).

Having problems with bag zippers that are hard to open and close? Try rubbing some candle wax onto the zip, tea lights are fine too!
